Jump Starters for SUVs and Trucks
The rating that matters is not peak amps, it is the engine size the maker will stand behind. On a diesel that number is roughly half the gas figure, and that is not marketing caution.

Buy by the published engine rating, not peak amps. For a gas V8 SUV that means a pack rated to 7.0L or more; for a diesel pickup it means one rated to at least your engine size in the DIESEL column, which is always roughly half the gas figure on the same pack.
The gas number and the diesel number are different
Every pack publishes two engine ceilings, and the gap between them is large and consistent. It is the single most useful thing on the box and most buyers read only the first figure.
Note that the GB70 and the Alpha85 publish the same 2000A peak and different gas ceilings. That is exactly why peak amps is the wrong number to shop on - it has no standardized test behind it, so it is not comparable between manufacturers. The engine rating is the manufacturer stating what they will stand behind.
Why diesels take roughly half
A diesel has no spark plugs. It ignites fuel by compressing air until it is hot enough, which means compression ratios far higher than a gas engine - and the starter has to turn the engine against all of that compression before it will fire.
Add cold. Thick oil at 0F, plus glow plugs drawing their own substantial current before you even crank, and a diesel start is the hardest electrical job in ordinary motoring. The halved diesel ceiling on every pack in the table is the manufacturer being accurate rather than cautious.
Two practical consequences: let the glow plug cycle finish before cranking, and if your truck runs dual batteries, understand that a jump pack is supporting a much larger system than it would on a car. The mechanism behind cold starting generally is in why cars do not start in the cold.
The storage problem gets worse on a truck
Lithium packs deliver less current when cold, which is the central awkwardness of the whole category and is covered in lithium vs lead-acid. On a truck it bites harder for a mundane reason: bigger packs are heavier, heavier packs end up in the bed or a toolbox, and both of those are outside.
A GB70-class pack weighs enough that people stop carrying it in the cab. That is the moment it becomes a pack at outside temperature on the coldest morning of the year. Keep it in the cab if you possibly can - the cab is the difference between the rating on the box and what you actually get.
The air-compressor question
Several packs in this class bundle an air compressor, and on a truck that combination is more defensible than it is on a car. Truck tires are higher volume, they lose more absolute pressure for the same temperature drop, and a light-truck tire at low pressure under load is a real problem rather than a warning light.
The honest caveat is that a bundled compressor is rarely as good as a dedicated one, and it makes an already-heavy pack heavier. If tire pressure is your recurring winter job rather than starting, buy the two separately - the tire inflator picks are here.
The case for cables on a truck
Worth stating plainly, because it cuts against the product on this page: if you drive a diesel and you are usually around other vehicles, heavy 2 AWG cables outperform any consumer jump pack and have no cold derating and nothing to charge.
A pack earns its place when there is no second vehicle - a rural driveway, a job site at 5am, a trailhead. That is the situation cables cannot solve, and it is the only reason to carry the weight. Jump starter vs jumper cables works through the trade.
Do notassume a car-rated pack will start your diesel
A 1000A pack rated to 3.0L diesel will not turn over a 6.7L. It may crank it slowly enough to feel promising and then flatten itself, leaving you with a dead truck and a dead pack. Match the diesel column, not the gas one.
The short version
- Half-ton gas pickup or mid-size SUV: the GB50 at 7.0L gas is comfortable headroom.
- Full-size gas V8: GB70 or Alpha85.
- Any diesel: GB70 or Alpha85, both rated to 6.0L diesel. Nothing smaller.
- Skip: the GB40 for anything truck-sized. It is an excellent car pack and its 3.0L diesel ceiling is a real limit.

What size jump starter do I need for a truck?
Match the published engine rating rather than peak amps. A full-size gas V8 wants a pack rated to 8.0L gas or more; any diesel wants one rated to at least your engine size in the diesel column, which is roughly half the gas figure on the same pack.
Why do diesels need a bigger jump starter?
