Why Cars Do Not Start in the Cold
Two things fail at once, in opposite directions. Diagnosing which one you have takes about five seconds and decides whether you need a jump or a tow.

Two things happen at once. Engine oil thickens as it cools, so the starter has to work harder to turn the engine. And the battery, being a chemical device, delivers less current when cold. More demand and less supply, on the same morning - which is why a battery that was fine in October fails in December.
Side one: the oil gets thicker
Engine oil viscosity rises sharply as temperature falls. At 0F the oil in a cold engine is dramatically more resistant to being pushed around than it was at 70F, and the starter motor has to overcome all of that resistance to turn the crankshaft.
This is exactly what the first number in an oil grade describes. In 5W-30, the 5W is the cold-weather rating - the W is for winter - and a lower number means the oil stays thinner when cold. If you live somewhere genuinely cold and your car is running a 10W oil where the manufacturer permits 5W or 0W, that is a cheap change with a real effect on cold cranking.
Side two: the battery gets weaker
A lead-acid battery produces current through a chemical reaction, and chemical reactions slow down as temperature drops. A battery in good condition still has plenty of margin at 0F. A battery that is three or four years old and has been sitting at partial charge does not.
This is why cold weather feels like it kills batteries. It does not, exactly - it exposes the ones that were already marginal. The battery was going to fail; the cold just chose the date, and it chose the coldest morning rather than a convenient one.
Diagnosing it by sound, in five seconds
That last row matters. If the engine is turning over at normal speed and simply not catching, the battery is fine and a jump pack does nothing. People spend a lot of cold mornings jumping cars that did not need jumping.
Check the terminals before anything else
Corroded or loose battery terminals produce exactly the symptoms of a dead battery, and they are free to fix. Look for white or blue-green crusty deposits around the posts. Wiggle each cable clamp by hand - it should not move at all.
Clean terminals with a wire brush, refit them tightly, and a surprising number of no-start mornings end right there.
What to do right now
- Turn everything off - headlights, heater, radio, heated seats, phone charger. Every one of those is drawing current the starter needs.
- Check the terminals are clean and tight.
- Try again, cranking for no more than five seconds at a time with fifteen seconds between attempts. Continuous cranking overheats the starter motor.
- If it is a manual transmission and you are on a slope with room, a push start still works and costs nothing.

- Once it starts, drive for at least twenty minutes. A five-minute trip takes more out of the battery than the alternator puts back.
Do notkeep cranking when nothing is happening
A starter motor is not rated for continuous use and will overheat, which turns a battery problem into a starter problem. Five seconds on, fifteen seconds off. If three attempts produce nothing, stop and diagnose rather than continuing.
Preventing it next winter
- Get the battery load-tested in the fall. Any parts store does it free in five minutes, and it turns a surprise into a plan.
- Replace a battery over four years old before winter rather than during it. Doing it in a warm garage in October is a different experience from doing it in a parking lot in January.
- Use a battery maintainer if the car sits for days and you have power where you park.
- Drive it properly at least weekly. Short trips never replace what starting takes out.
- Check the oil grade against what the manufacturer permits for your climate.

My car cranks strongly but will not fire. Is it the battery?
No. If the engine is turning over at normal speed the battery is doing its job, and the problem is fuel, spark or a sensor. A jump start will not help, and this is the point at which it becomes a mechanic's problem rather than yours.
