More CCA is more starting margin, and margin is what you are buying. It is not the only number: reserve capacity tells you how many minutes the car can run on the battery alone if the alternator fails, which matters if you drive at night in winter with the lights, blower, heated seats and rear defroster all drawing at once.
AGM against flooded
Every battery in this roundup is an AGM - absorbed glass mat - rather than a conventional flooded battery. The differences that matter in winter:
- Sealed, so there is nothing to spill and no water to check in a cold garage.

A float charger keeps the battery topped up so the problem never develops. If you have power where you park and the car sits, buy that before you buy a battery.
When to replace rather than diagnose
- Over four years old and cranking has got noticeably slower. Replace it before winter rather than during.
- You have jump-started it more than once. A battery that goes flat repeatedly is either failing or there is a parasitic drain - and either way another jump is not the answer.
- The case is bulging, cracked or leaking. Replace it now, and do not attempt to jump it.
- It failed a load test. Any parts store will do one free, and it takes five minutes.
Do notcharge or jump a frozen battery
A deeply discharged battery can freeze, and a frozen battery can rupture under charging current. If it has been sitting flat in deep cold, or the case is distorted, it is a replacement rather than a recovery.
