About Scrape & Shield
An independent site about winter car gear, written by one person who reads the manuals and does not pretend to have tested anything.
What this site is
Scrape & Shield researches the gear that gets a car through winter - ice scrapers, snow brushes, windshield covers, de-icer, washer fluid, wiper blades, jump starters, batteries, emergency kits and traction aids - and recommends specific products. When you buy through a link here we earn a commission from the retailer, at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model and it is described in full on the affiliate disclosure page.
It exists because this category is badly served. We read nine competing pages carefully before writing a word. One of them had done real testing. The rest used language that implied testing without ever quite claiming it, and most published no method at all. Seven of the nine showed prices that were stale, static or simply absent - one page was still displaying figures stamped January 2026 in the middle of the buying season.
We cannot out-test the one competitor with a real laboratory, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can do is be the site that says plainly what it did and did not do, publishes its sources, and never shows you a price it has not verified.
Who writes it
Everything here is written by Scooter M.. Scooter M. is an enthusiast who's genuinely into this stuff. I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the math. No lab coat.
That framing is deliberate and it is worth being precise about, because the easiest thing in the world would be to write "veteran" or "expert" and hope nobody checks. So, explicitly:
- Not a mechanic, and not certified as one.
- Not an engineer, not licensed, and not credentialed in anything relevant.
- Not a test lab. There is no fleet of cars, no cold chamber and no borrowed units.
- Not a team. There is no editorial board and no expert panel reviewing this.
What is true: the manuals get read, the published specifications get compiled into one table, the arithmetic gets done, and the sources get named. That is a real method, it produces genuinely useful comparisons, and it is the kind of claim a reader can check.
What this site is not
- Not a testing outfit. We have never used any product recommended here. Every page says so where the recommendation is made, not in small print at the bottom.
- Not affiliated with any manufacturer. Nobody pays for placement, nobody sees a page before it publishes, and no brand has any input into a ranking.
- Not a retailer. We do not sell, stock or ship anything, which is why no button on this site says "buy now".
- Not a review aggregator. We do not pad pages with customer quotes to reach a word count.
How it is funded
Scrape & Shield participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. We earn from qualifying purchases. Right now Amazon is the only retailer we link, because it is the only affiliate program we have actually joined - and we do not build tracking links for programs we have not joined, even where one exists publicly and would pay more.
Commission never changes a ranking. Where two products are genuinely comparable we will say which is better for the buyer, and where the cheaper option is the right answer, that is the one at the top of the list. The editorial policy spells out how that is enforced.
About the prices
Prices on this site come from a live data check rather than from copy. When a verified current price exists, the button shows it along with the date it was checked. When one does not, the button says "check price on Amazon" and shows no number at all.
There is no third state where we show you a number we remember. That is a structural decision rather than a policy one: there is no price field anywhere in this site's content, so it is not possible for a stale figure to end up on a page.
