Someone reviewing printed documents at a table

Independence

No manufacturer, retailer or brand pays to appear on this site, and none ever will. There are no sponsored posts, no paid placements, no paid reviews and no arrangements under which a brand sees a page before it publishes. Nobody outside this site has any input into a ranking.

We do earn a commission when a reader buys through a link here. That is disclosed above the first affiliate link on every page that has one, not only in the footer, and it is explained in full on the affiliate disclosure page.

Commission and rankings

Commission never changes a ranking. That sentence is easy to write, so here is the specific rule behind it.

Retailer commission rates differ by product category. Automotive items pay more than several of the other categories that winter products fall into, which means an emergency kit full of blankets and first-aid supplies can pay less than a jump starter of the same price. Where two products are genuinely comparable for the buyer, we may prefer the better-paying one. Where they are not comparable, the better product wins and the commission is irrelevant.

Buyer first, always. If the cheaper product is the right answer, the cheaper product goes at the top of the list - and several of them do.

What we will never claim

  • That we tested, owned, used or handled a product, in any wording, including the softer forms like "in our experience with" or "after weeks of use".
  • Any credential the author does not hold. No mechanic, no engineer, no license, no certification, no expert panel, no medical or technical review that did not happen.
  • Any tenure. No "long-time", no "veteran", no "seasoned", no number of years.
  • A price we have not verified through the live data layer within the last 48 hours.
  • A star rating or review count as our own. Retailer ratings belong to the retailer and are shown attributed, never marked up as ours.
  • A specification a manufacturer does not publish. Where a figure is missing, our tables say it is missing.
  • A quote from a customer. Scrape & Shield has no storefront and no customers, so there is nothing honest to put on the page and we put nothing there. An empty space is the correct answer; an invented quote is the kind of thing that ends a publication.

The single test is whether a competitor, a journalist or a search quality rater could check a claim and find it false. If they could, it does not ship. The full method is on how we pick.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we want to know, and the fastest way to tell us is info@scrapeandshield.com. You do not need to be polite about it.

  1. Factual errors are corrected as soon as we can confirm the correct information.
  2. A correction that changes the substance of a recommendation is noted on the page, not silently patched.
  3. The last-reviewed date moves when a page is genuinely re-read, and only then.
  4. If we cannot verify a claim either way, we remove it rather than leaving it up with a hedge.

Review cadence

In a seasonal category, page age matters more than usual - a roundup written for last winter can be recommending products that are no longer sold. So every page carries a visible last-reviewed date, and each kind of page has a schedule.

  • Prices refresh daily and are automatically suppressed if the check is more than 48 hours old.
  • Every roundup is fully re-verified pre-season, in August and September, before the frost line moves south. This is the most important recurring job on the site, because the homepage claims we picked before the first frost and that has to stay true.
  • Roundups get a stock and availability check monthly from November to February, because seasonal stockouts in this category are constant.
  • Objection guides are reviewed every 12 months, or immediately if a product formulation changes.
  • The winter checklist is reviewed every six months.
  • Trust pages are reviewed whenever anything about how we work changes.

On how these pages are written

Pages here are researched and drafted with software assistance and are reviewed before publication by Scooter M., who is responsible for everything on the site. The research itself - the specification tables, the sources, the prices - comes from named published sources rather than from recall, which is why every roundup ends with a list of exactly what was read.

Where a figure could not be verified, the page says so. That is the rule that everything else here follows from.

What we deliberately do not cover

  • Winter tires. Fitment-heavy, expensive to get wrong, and we do not have the vehicle data to make a recommendation responsibly. We will write about how to think about them; we will not rank them.
  • Anything requiring mechanical work beyond swapping a wiper blade or a battery. We are not qualified to tell you how to service a car and we are not going to pretend to be.
  • Products from affiliate programs we have not joined. If a brand-direct program would pay better but we are not in it, we do not build a tracking link for it.
