Do You Need Snow Chains With AWD?
All-wheel drive is very good at one third of the problem. The confidence it produces is why AWD cars are so often the ones in the ditch.

Often yes. All-wheel drive helps you accelerate and does nothing for braking or cornering, both of which are limited by the tires. And where chain control is posted, the requirement applies to your vehicle regardless of drivetrain unless the sign specifically exempts it.
What AWD actually does
All-wheel drive distributes engine torque to four wheels instead of two. That gives more total grip available for putting power down, which is why an AWD car pulls away from a snowy junction confidently while a front-drive car scrabbles.
That is the entire benefit. Driving is three things - accelerating, braking and cornering - and AWD helps with one of them.
The two identical rows are the important ones. Braking and cornering are limited by the friction between four contact patches and the road, and the drivetrain has no involvement in that at all.
Why AWD cars end up in ditches
Because the feedback is misleading. The thing you notice while driving is how easily the car gets moving and how confidently it pulls up a hill. Both feel like the car is handling the conditions well.
Then you brake for a corner and discover that stopping distance is exactly what it would be in any other car on the same tires. The confidence was earned on acceleration and spent on braking, and there was nothing to warn you in between.
This is not an argument against AWD. It is an argument for remembering that the tires are doing the work in two of the three things that matter.
Chain control and AWD
Chain-control requirements are posted by road authorities and they vary by state, by road and by the level of restriction in force. Some restriction levels exempt AWD and four-wheel-drive vehicles fitted with snow tires; others do not exempt anything.
So the honest answer is that the sign is the authority, not the drivetrain. Check the requirement for the specific road you are driving before you set off, and carry chains if there is any chance of hitting a higher restriction level. Arriving at a checkpoint without them means turning around.
How many wheels do chains go on?
Follow your owner manual, and it will usually say the drive axle - which on an AWD car is typically the front. Some manufacturers specify all four for AWD vehicles.
- Front-wheel drive: the front two.
- Rear-wheel drive: the rear two.
- All-wheel drive: whatever the manual says. Do not assume, and do not fit two to the rear of a front-biased AWD car because you read it somewhere.
- Never fit chains to one wheel only. Unequal traction across an axle is genuinely dangerous under braking.
Do notfit chains before checking your owner manual
Some vehicles have insufficient clearance between the tire and the strut, fender liner or brake lines to run chains at all, and the manual states this explicitly. Fitting them anyway damages precisely those components. Check first - it is one page.
The thing that actually matters more
Winter tires. They change braking and cornering, which is where AWD does nothing, and the difference is not marginal - it is the single largest improvement available to a car in snow.
A two-wheel-drive car on winter tires is a considerably safer thing in snow than an AWD car on all-seasons, which surprises people who have paid extra for the drivetrain. We do not rank tires on this site, because tires are fitment-heavy and we would need vehicle data we do not have to recommend a specific one honestly. But that is the recommendation in general terms, and it is worth acting on.
What to carry either way

The most traction available and the most hassle. Chains work when nothing else does, they are what chain-control signs mean, and fitting them in the dark is genuinely miserable.
