How to Get a Car Unstuck From Snow
The first instinct is more throttle, and it is the one that makes the situation worse. Here is the order that works, starting with stopping.

Stop spinning the wheels. A spinning tire melts snow and refreezes it into polished ice, so every extra second of throttle makes the surface harder to escape. Clear snow from in front of and behind the driven wheels, straighten the steering, and pull away gently in the highest gear that will move the car.
Why spinning makes it worse
A spinning tire generates friction heat at the contact patch. That melts a thin film of snow into water, which immediately refreezes as the tire moves on, and what you are left with is polished ice exactly where you need grip.
It also digs. The tire displaces snow backwards and downwards, so the car settles until its floor pan is resting on packed snow - and once the chassis is bearing weight, the tires have less load on them and even less grip.
Both effects are cumulative and both happen in seconds. That is why the first step is taking your foot off.
The sequence
- Stop. Take your foot off the throttle entirely. Everything below works better on unpolished snow.
- Get out and look. Which wheels are driven, where the snow actually is, and whether the chassis is sitting on anything. Thirty seconds of looking beats five minutes of guessing.
- Clear a channel in front of and behind each driven wheel. A car length if you can manage it. You need room to build momentum, not just room to start moving.
- Clear the snow packed under the car. If the floor pan is resting on snow, the weight is not on the tires and nothing else will work.
- Straighten the steering. Angled front wheels plow snow rather than rolling over it, and on a front-wheel-drive car that alone can be the problem.
- Turn off traction control if the car lets you. Traction control cuts power when it detects wheelspin, which is right when driving and wrong when you are trying to build momentum from a standstill.
- Pull away in the highest gear that will move the car - second rather than first, or the winter mode on an automatic. Less torque at the wheel means less spin.
- Rock it. Gently forward, gently back, building a little more distance each time. Let the car settle between direction changes rather than slamming between them.
Without a shovel
A specific and common search, so: it is harder, and it is possible.
- Use whatever you have as a scoop - the floor mat, a hubcap, an ice scraper, a coffee cup. Clearing the wheels is the job that matters, not the elegance of the tool.
- Floor mats also work as traction aids. Rubber side down, pushed firmly against the driven tires. You may not get them back, and getting out matters more.
- Sand, cat litter, gravel from a roadside or ash all work as grit under the tire. So does a bag of the ice melt you keep for the front steps.
- Cardboard, a branch or a piece of carpet under the tire gives the same thing a mat would.
- Let a little air out of the tires if nothing else works, which widens the contact patch and improves grip. Reinflate at the first opportunity - this is a last resort and driving far on soft tires is its own problem.

A spinning tire fires a traction mat, floor mat or piece of gravel backwards with real force. Anybody pushing stands to the side of the car, never in line with a wheel, and never between your car and another vehicle.
When to stop trying
There is a point where continuing costs more than calling for help, and it is worth recognizing it:
- The chassis is resting on packed snow and you cannot clear underneath it.
- You are in a ditch, or the car is at an angle where pulling out risks damage.
- There is a burning smell from the transmission or the clutch. Stop immediately - that is expensive damage in progress.
- You are getting genuinely cold. Hypothermia impairs judgment early and quietly, and a tow is cheaper than the alternative.
- The exhaust is buried and you have been running the engine for heat. Clear it, or stop running the engine.

So it does not happen again
Traction mats and a shovel in the trunk turn this from a two-hour problem into a ten-minute one, and they are the two purchases that genuinely change the outcome - mats here, shovels here. If it happens regularly on a route you have to drive, the honest answer is winter tires, which are outside what this site covers.
